(BL) Border League
August
17 / A Kelso Sevens
Lost to Jed-forest in 2nd Round 12 - 22
20 / H Peebles (BL) LOST: 0 - 28
Gala opened strongly but Peebles, on their occasional visits to Gala territory, took their chances to score two tries and build up a fifteen point interval lead. In the second period Gala, who were missing a number of key players, fell away and Peebles finished strongly. Jason Fale and Jamie Henderson featured well in loose play for Gala, but a lot of work has yet to be done on the home sides lineout and scrum. |

25 / A Selkirk Sevens
Lost to Hawick in 2nd Round 19 - 21
31 / H Kirkcaldy WON: 14 - 9
Gala deserved their victory in the opening game of the BT Premiership, Division 2, but the result was closer than it should have been. Gala missed six penalty chances, but a sound forward display promised well for the future. Jackson Berry kicked one penalty goal and Andy McLean two, with Calum Macrae scoring the game's only try xearly on after good work by newcomer Mike Marais from South Africa.
September
7 / A Biggar LOST: 13 - 30
Gala's short-handed pack could make little of a strong Biggar eight, and the backs were on limited rations all afternoon. Injuries before and during the game did nothing for Gala's cause and they lost for the third time on the Hartreemill ground. Gala's scorers were Jackson Berry, who kicked two first half goals, Calum Macrae, whose late try followed good work by replacement Ian Wilson, and Andy McLean, who converted the try.
14 / H Selkirk WON: 31 - 17
In the team's best performance of the season, which doubled up as a Border League match, Gala showed lots of commitment, the forwards taking control and providing the backs with fast and clean ball. Gala collected a bonus point with four tries, all of them well created and thoroughly deserved.
Injuries, sin-binning, and tactical changes meant the team was constantly changing its shape, but the performance was a big improvement on the Biggar match. The tries came from David Gray, Ian Wilson, Ian McCall and Jason Fale, with Andy McLean kicking three penalties and a conversion.
21 / A Ayr WON: 18 - 9
Gala lifted their game again when facing a big and strong Ayr side which has started the season well. It was an outstanding performance by the Maroons on a ground where it is always difficult to win, but the victory should have been easier, with several goal kicks going by.
Gala scored two good tries, with Calum Macraes a particular beauty as he came in on an angled run to finish a move that had started away back. Jamie Henderson had his first try for the Maroons following a pick and drive, and Andy McLean kicked a conversion and two penalties.
28 / H Murrayfield Wanderers WON: 19 - 14
This was a less convincing win but kept Galas momentum going in Division 2. Too many chances went astray, with poor handling and indecisive finishing, but there was an encouraging performance by a short handed pack. Injuries upset the flow of the game, which should have seen Gala out of sight by halftime.
Two early penalties were kicked by Andy McLean, and he added another two later as well as converting a fine try by Chris Dalgleish, who had come on as a replacement. |

October
5 / H Kelso (BL) LOST: 20 - 28
A game that saw Gala dominate position and possession ended with an unexpected defeat. A critical ten minutes in the first period saw Gala go behind by 18-5 but there were two tries before the break which showed what Gala could be capable of. Total control in the second period saw another try but the late loss of a penalty meant that the team left with no points at all.
The two first half tries were scored by Graham Bryce and Ian Berthinussen, with the second half counter coming from Mike Marais, his first try since joining Gala. Andy McLean had a penalty and a conversion.
12 / A Glasgow Hutchesons' Aloysians LOST: 12 - 24
Gala did enough in the first half to lead 12-3 as the interval approached, but fell away later on, conceding penalties which were readily kicked by GHA's impressive stand-off, and two late tries. The Maroons had enough ball to make sure of the game, but kicked badly and lacked explosive pace.
Iain Berthinussen took over the Gala kicking and converted his own try, but missed three first half penalties and the conversion of a good individual try by right winger Gordon Waddell.
19 / H Watsonians LOST: 34 - 6
Another defeat saw Gala sink in the Division 2 table. Despite having a lot of pressure, the team's finishing was poor and Watsonians, who enjoyed an easy first half, were deserving winners. Gala were a bit upset by injuries, which put an end to the plans to end a losing run. Jackson Berry returned to the side and kicked two first half penalties, but the total absence of try scoring, for the first time in the Premiership this season, meant that Gala finished far from earning a bonus point. |
|
26 / H Grangemouth LOST: 8 - 13
Gala's miserable run continued at Grangemouth where our first ever visit saw the team failing to improve on recent displays. Despite some individual performances which looked promising, the team failed to get any momentum going until the very end, when lots of pressure could not be turned into points.
Jackson Berry kicked an early penalty and just on the interval Scott Cranston squared the score line with a good try at the corner after Berry had taken a quick penalty.
26 / A Allan Glen's WON: 55 - 5 (BT Cellnet Cup 3rd Round)
Playing at The Bearyards for the first time, Gala recovered a lot of early season form, and put on a confident display to move forward in this year's cup competition. The team was short of several regulars, including three wingers, but both their replacements were among the scorers of the side's eight tries.
Gala's tries came from Iain Berthinussen (two) Scott Cranston, Andy Miller, John Dalziel, Andy McLean and newcomer Steven Scott. There was also a penalty try awarded, and Gala's two successful kickers were Jackson Berry with a penalty and three conversions, and Andy McLean with three conversions.
November
9 / A Kirkcaldy WON: 16 -12
This satisfactory win completed the double over Kirkcaldy and was well earned, largely through a hefty performance by the pack. The return of Jason Fale made a major difference to the lineout and loose play, and all the forwrds responded well. They were in powerful driving mood. Jackson Berry kicked three good penalties and came near with another. He also converted the penalty try awarded to Gala after the pack had driven twenty metres.
15 / H Biggar LOST: 6 - 15
Things were looking well for Gala after twenty minutes but the side's game went to pieces following Jason Fale's yellow card just before the break. Biggar scored two tries against the short-handed Maroons, who were never able to get on top again. Jackson Berry kicked two good penalties for Gala in the first half, but missed three in the same period.
23 / H Selkirk WON: 40 - 11
With this convincing win we completed the double over Selkirk, scoring a total of nine tries in the two games. After a few minutes of uncertainty we were always in control and another big performance by the forwards set up the win, which came accompanied by the bonus point which helped us up the league table. Jason Fale had another impressive game with two tries, and the other scorers were John Dalziel, Andy McLean and Chris Dalgleish with tries, McLean adding a conversion and Jckson Berry kicking two conversions and three penalties.

30 / H Ayr WON: 21 - 0
Taking charge of the game right from the start, Gala were always in control, and a varied approach, ranging from shrewd kicking to enterprising handling, saw the side complete another double. The forwards were in rampaging form, and Ayr, who had been lying second top in Division 2, seldom looked like being any threat. Jackson Berry kicked well in poor conditions and sent over six penalty goals, with Andy McLean adding another in the last minute.
December
7 / A Murrayfield Wanderers WON: 17 - 9
The third League win in a row did no harm to Galas prospects, but the side never looked like picking up the bonus point that would have helped so much. The game was a dull affair, with Galas two tries the high points. A strong finish helped Galas cause but there was some indifferent kicking and miss-handling early on. Iain Berthinussen scored before the break with a powerful run on to a quickly won ball, and was again on hand to intercept and score the clinching try five minutes from time. Jackson Berry kicked an early penalty and converted the first try, Andy McLean adding the extra points to the late score.14 / A Musselburgh WON: 37 - 13
The fourth round hurdle in the Scottish Cup was easily overcome at Stoneyhill. It was a comfortable enough win once the side settled down, having gone six points behind early on. But the forwards took control with some powerful rucking and mauling, and the backs were ready and waiting. Mike Marais had two tries, Iain Berthinussen one, and Simon DAgrosa, in Galas starting lineup for only the second time, showed a good turn of speed in scoring his first try for the side. Jackson Berry kicked three penalties and two conversions, and Andy McLean also converted two tries.
21 / H Kelso WON: 38 - 10
Our winning run continued with an easy victory over an inexperienced Kelso side in the only Premiership match played in Scotland. The underground heating at Netherdale made all the difference, and the team, inspired by a strong forward performance, got ample revenge for the defeat at Poynder Park. Galas back row was in great form and the trio of Peter Cockburn, John Dalziel and Andy Miller scored all the five tries, with a brace each to the last two. Jackson Berry kicked two penalties and two conversions. Mike Marais put over Galas first drop goal for a season and a half. |
|
26 / H Melrose (BL) LOST: 13 - 16
Conditions were not helpful towards a handling game, but there was some suprisingly good rugby in the Boxing Day fixture. Melrose just got the Border League points with a penalty goal in the last minutes of the game, but Gala did enough to show how greatly improved the team is after their poor start. Jackson Berry kicked two penalties, and Andy McLean converted a late try by Dave Boland which squared the match with five minutes to go.
January
4 / H Glasgow Hutchesons Aloysians DRAW: 13-13
Our run of wins in the Premiership was halted in an exciting but not particularly memorable game. The promotion bid was marred with the loss of two, or even three, potential points but with so many other games postponed the outcome will depend on many other results. Gala had a six point lead at one stage, but were never in total command, with the forwards having an off-day. Mike Marais scored an early try, and Jackson Berry converted, as well as kicking two penalties before the interval. |
|
18 / A Watsonians LOST: 0 - 25
A first half full of enterprise and imagination still failed to give us a score, and Watsonians managed to squeeze an interval lead of ten points. But in the second half a bad run of injuries and a reshuffled side left us trailing behind the home side. Watsonians won the Division 2 title with four tries, a conversion and a penalty, and thoroughly deserved the victory over an undaunted but outplayed Gala.
25 / H Grangemouth WON: 17 - 0
A win was a good way to end the league programme, but we needed help from other quarters if the late bid for promotion was to be successful, and that did not materialise. The game at Netherdale saw two good tries, from John Dalziel and Iain Berthinussen, each of them converted by Andy McLean, who also kicked an early penalty. The Gala forwards had the greater control of the game, but the team failed to produce the scores which should have come from so much possession. |

February
1 / A Melrose (BT Cellnet Cup) LOST: 19 -23
In one of the most exciting Cup games of recent years we lost this fifth round tie in extra time. But the young team put in a great performance to lead by three points with five minutes left after trailing at one stage by 6 - 16. Gala were given a great lead by a fine back row well led by captain John Dalziel. Andy McLean, as a very capable stand-in kicker, kicked four penalties and converted Chris Dalgleishs try, the winger getting the ball near the half way line, and following up his own kick ahead for the try which brought Gala back into the game.
8 / H Jed-forest LOST: 17 - 33
First half slackness cost Gala this Border League game, with five tries being snapped up by a much more alert Jed side. It was a different matter after the break, but even with the help of the wind it never looked as though Jeds big lead would be overtaken. Iain Berthinussen continued his impressive form with two tries, Alan Johnston forced his way over for another, and Andy McLean kicked one conversion.
15 / H Corstorphine (Combined Tournament) WON: 65 - 24
A ten try victory brought Gala’s highest score for four seasons, with the forwards responding well to new coach George Graham. Even without several injured players the side turned on a colourful display of attacking rugby apart from a brief period just after the break. Gala’s try scorers were Andy McLean, David Gray (two), Tim Miskelly (two), John Berthinussen, Alan Johnston, Euan Johnstone, and replacements John Anderson and Lee Kibble, the latter making his first appearance at the age of 16. McLean kicked a penalty and six conversions.
March
1/A Dunfermline (Combined Tournament) WON: 31 - 20
It all looked very easy at the halftime whistle when Gala were leading by 31-3, with tries from Simon DAgrosa (two), Andy Miller, Jason Fale and David Gray. Andy McLean converted three of them. But after the break injuries took a heavy toll of the Gala side and they lost control of the game. A strong home pack threatened a major upset, but Gala steadied in the closing period to record their second win in the new tournament.
9 / H Musselburgh (Combined Tournament) WON: 48 - 5
Injuries forced a lot of changes but the youngsters fitted in well and Gala never looked in any sort of trouble. Conditions were far from good but Gala managed some crisp handling and their six tries were all well worked. Gordon Waddell had a hattrick of tries, with others coming from Peter Cockburn, Guy Frater and Iain Berthinussen. Andy McLean put over six penalties and added two conversions.
15 / A Haddington (Combined Tournament) WON: 42 - 12
After twice going behind in the opening half the side settled down to play some expansive and attractive rugby. The backs were full of running and more than a match for a home side which has just gained promotion. Gala right winger Gordon Waddell, who is hitting a rich vein of form, ran in his second hattrick in eight days, and other tries came from youngsters Calum Macrae, Simon DAgrosa and Graeme Bryce. Andy McLean put over two penalties and three conversions.
29 A Watsonians (Combined Tournament) LOST: 13 - 44
The play-off for the new competition saw us go down again to Watsonians, for the third time this season. It was another case of Watsonians eventually taking control of a spirited but younger side, but Gala contested well again until the interval. Two soft scores at the end put a gloss on the Watsonians performance which they scarcely deserved. Iain Berthinussen scored an early try, converted by Andy McLean who also kicked two penalties before the interval.
April
6 Gala Sevens Tournament
After a spirited opening tie against Aberdeen G..S.F.P. we ran into Glasgow Hawks in the second round. The first round encounter saw tries from Callum Macrae, Iain Berthinussen and two from John Dalziel, with Jackson Berry putting over three conversions for a 26 - 17 win. But the Hawks tie, which included an unusual element with the sending off of a Glasgow player, was a tougher affair and went to extra time before the short handed side secured the winner. Two tries by Macrae were the feature of the Gala effort. In the final Watsonians won by 21-15
9 / A Hawick (BL) LOST: 0 - 74
Our last game of the season ended in a massive defeat by a Greens side which still had an eye on the Border League. Much under strength, the young Gala side stuck in well but were overwhelmed by some powerful running and enterprising rugby. It was a particular disappointment for David Boland and Richie Scott, each of them playing their last game for Gala.
12 / Melrose Sevens Tournament
Galas great tradition of beating overseas sides at The Greenyards sports came unstuck with a 33-0 defeat in their first tie, going down to Ponsonby, the New Zealand side which went on to lose to the eventual winners, from Sale. Professional skills and strengths were features of an afternoon which saw no Border side reach the semi finals.
19 / Hawick Sevens
After wins over Aberdeen G.S.F.P., and guest side Natal Province, Gala had a hard struggle against the surprise packet Selkirk. The Soutars won the semi-final tie before losing to the Royal Scots.
20 / Berwick Sevens
The circuit moved on to Scremerston on Easter Sunday, and got off to a great start with a close-run tie between Gala and Melrose. The Maroons got through but lost out to Hawick in the second round.
27 / Peebles Sevens
The Maroons served up some exciting rugby in beating Hawick at The Gytes, but crashed out of the tournament to a strong Boroughmuir side in the semi final. Numerous injuries upset the squad and players had to be borrowed from other clubs.
May
3 / Langholm Sevens
Gala opened with a narrow win over an understrength Jed-forest side, but went down in the second round to the eventual winners, Glasgow Hutchesons Aloysians who beat the Royal Scots in the final.
4 / Earlston Sevens
Two good wins over St Boswells and Kelso saw Gala through to the semi finals, but the Royal Scots, with their strong Fijian line-up took the tie by 40-19 before going out to Jed-forest in the final.
10 / Jed-Forest Sevens
The end of the Border sevens season saw Gala falling to Grangemouth in the second round at Riverside Park in a closely fought tie, going out by 17-14. Earlier on the Maroons had scored freely in overcoming Aberdeen G.S.F.P. by 38-12 |
