Duns (BL) |
H Won 60 - 7 |
| |
Newcomers to the rugby worlds oldest league competition, Duns were no match for a fit and fast Gala side which dominated throughout. David Gray (three), Tom Weir (two), Gordon Waddell, Lee Kibble, Tim Stuck, Neil Adams, and John Dalziel scored the tries, with Stuck and Ian Berthinussen converting one each. Andy McLean kicked three conversions. |

Kelso |
A Won 13 - 9 |
| |
Tom Weir, back from a spell at Melrose, scored one of the Gala tries in this close encounter before going off injured. Lee Kibble, one of the youngest players ever to turn out for Gala, had another, and Andy Mclean kicked a penalty. Gala had the better of the game throughout, and, unlike last year, were able to land the points that mattered. |

Haddington |
H Won 57 - 3 |
| |
Despite losing the opening score Gala were always in control of the game and played some scintillating rugby while recording ten tries. Some of the scores, on a fine day for rugby, involved constant handling and recycling, at a speed to which the visitors had no answer. Galas tries came from Jamie Henderson (two), Iain Berthniussen (two), Lee Kibble (two), Scott Paterson (two), Tim Stuck and Paul MacDonald. Andy McLean kicked a penalty and two conversions. |
| 13th |
Grangemouth |
A Won 32 - 11 |
| |
Gala got stronger as the game went on and ended up with five tries and a convincing win. The game often got bogged down among the forwards, and Gala seldom were able to cut loose, despite their score in the opening minute. Tries came from Scott Paterson (two), Andy Miller, Tim Stuck and John Dalziel, with Andy McLean kicking two conversions and a penalty. |
| 20th |
Murrayfield Wanderers |
H Won 68 - 0 |
| |
Taking control up front, Gala were able to unleash their backs who exploited some weak tackling by a dispirited Edinburgh side. Galas superior fitness set them up for their highest score in the Premiership for nine years. Andy McLean kicked 18 points with two penalties and six conversions. Tries came from Iain Berthinussen (two), Neil Adams (two), Gordon Waddell, Paul MacDonald, Lee Kibble, Martin McGimpsey, David Gray and a penalty try award. |
| 27th |
Selkirk |
A Won 8 - 3 |
| |
It took a last minute try by the Gala pack - claimed by many but finally credited to Alan Johnston - to edge Gala home in a game that marked the reopening of the Philiphaugh ground after the summer floods. We had a hard struggle to subdue a Selkirk side which tackled resolutely throughout, and which profited from some uncharacteristically poor Gala handling. Andy McLean kicked a first half penalty, but after Selkirk equalised it looked as though a draw - even a defeat for the Maroons - was the likely result. |

Dundee HSFP |
H Won 12 - 10 |
| |
A late try by scrumhalf Tim Stuck saw Gala through in a hard tussle and the win lifted us to the top of Division 2. Dundee had led by two tries to nil at the break but a worthy performance by the under strength Maroons brought a try by replacement George Graham and a great touchline conversion by Andy McLean. Undefeated after six league games, Gala's win was well earned. |
| 11th |
Kirkcaldy |
A Lost 27 - 34 |
| |
The best of starts saw tries for Tim Stuck and Chris Dalgleish, one converted by Andy McLean but the team eased off a bit and allowed Kirkcaldy back into the game. Two more tries by Alan Johnston and Tim MisKelly, one converted by McLean, kept us in with a chance despite four tries and some great goal kicking for the home side. With the last kick of the match McLean snatched a second bonus point with a penalty, but a mixture of over confidence and more injuries saw the first defeat of the season. |
| 18th |
Jed-Forest |
H Won 19 - 14 |
| |
While never hitting top form, we earned a win through the strong play of the forwards, whose rolling mauls were impressive. The game featured the arrival of a new goal kicker in Chris Dalgleish, who added a try to his three early penalty goals. The vital try which sealed the result was scored by hooker Craig Hamilton at the end of an impressive drive by the Gala forwards. |

Stewart's Melville FP |
H Won 18 - 11 |
| |
With the pack on good form, and some spells of brisk running from the backs, Gala kept up their undefeated home run. Some indifferent kicking marred the game, but the win was fully deserved, even if another bonus point was missed. Chris Dalgleish had another good day with the boot, kicking two penalties and a conversion of a try by his brother Gavin, restored to the team for the first time this season. Replacement player coach George Graham made another impact and scored his second try of the season. |

BT Cup 3rd Round
Langholm |
x
A Won 49 - 6 |
| |
Our opening Cup appearance ended in an easy win at Milntown, despite fielding a team weakened by injury and other absences. Chris Dalgleish, who had kicked a penalty goal, was replaced by Bruce Walpole who went on to score three tries. Andy Mclean took over as kicker and ended with 21 points from a try, five conversions and two penalties. The other Gala tries came from John Dalziel, Tim MisKelly and a penalty try.

West of Scotland |
A Won 23 - 20 |
| |
With our forwards toiling to provide enough clean ball, we had a hard struggle to come away with a victory, even although the backs looked to have pace enough to win comfortably. Andy McLean took over the kicking duties again, and obliged with 18 points through his own try, scored at the corner after some neat footwork, plus two conversions and three penalties. Chris Weir scored the other try after one of Gala’s few impressive drives. |

Biggar |
H Won 25 - 14 |
| |
With the return of several injured players we were well set up for this top of the table match. A strong back row set the tone of the game, and a confident performance showed again how we can perform against better class opposition. Winger Chris Dalgleish added another two tries to his total, the first being a classy operation involving all the backs, and Neil Adams powered through for another try. Andy McLean converted two tries and kicked two penalties. |

BT Cup 4th Round
Heriots |
H Won 17 - 16 |
| |
One of the most exciting games of the season saw the Maroons come back from a 9-16 deficit with only nine minutes to go. Andy McLean’s fourth penalty set up the big finish and George Graham collected the winning try in injury time after a massive effort by the Gala forwards. Netherdale has turned into a bogey ground for Heriots, who have won on our ground only twice in the last 16 games. |
| 29th |
Kelso (BL) |
H Won 15 - 7 |
| |
Dreadful conditions made life difficult for both teams, but each managed a good try from the backs, with George Graham making sure for the Maroons late on with his fourth try of the season, all scored after coming on as a replacement. Andy McLean scored early on for Gala, converting the try himself. The home pack had the better of the struggle in rain and wind, and earned the win which kept the side in second place in Division 2. |

Haddington |
A Lost 21 - 24 |
| |
After the most promising of starts the side lost its way in the second period and were edged out by a lively home side. The penalty count against Gala was the critical influence on the result, but the team was off colour in the second half and surrendered a 21- 6 lead at the break. Two early tries by Gavin and Chris Dalgleish were followed by another from prop forward Geoff Cross, released from The Borders to play in place of George Graham. Andy McLean converted the three tries. |
| 13th |
Grangemouth |
H Won 49 - 8 |
| |
An easy eight try victory completed another season’s double, and showed the team at something near top form. Strong forwards, quick ball release and good handling in poor conditions were features of an impressive all-round display. Tries were scored by Chris Dalgleish (two), Bruce Walpole, Lee Kibble, Tim Stuck, Alan Johnston, John Dalziel and replacement Gordon Waddell. Andy McLean kicked three conversions, a penalty and hit the woodwork three times. |
| 26th |
Melrose (BL) |
A Lost 22 - 24 |
| |
As a Border League derby the game provided fine seasonal fare for the Boxing Day crowd. Gala’s four tries outscored Melrose’s three, but with only one conversion the game slipped away, despite a strong finish. Two late tries came from Iain Berthinussen and George Graham, after we had trailed by twelve points, but time ran out too soon. The other scores came from Alan Johnston and Chris Dalgleish, with Andy Mclean converting the first. |

Selkirk |
H Won 24 - 5 |
| |
Early forward control saw two quick tries for Gala through Tim Stuck and Lee Kibble, but it took long enough before the third, and the bonus point winning fourth, tries were scored. Gala had most of the territorial advantage, but Selkirk, while denied much ball, hung in and defended well. A try by Iain Berthinussen and a late score by Alan Johnston, saw us complete another double, Andy McLean having two conversions during the game. |
| 10th |
Dundee HSFP |
A Won 16 - 11 |
| |
Never behind in the closest of games, we produced the winning try within a couple of minutes of the final whistle. There was little between the sides, with some staunch defence by the Maroons, and some first rate covering of a lively Dundee back division.. Tim Stuck’s early try was followed by two penalty goals from Andy McLean, and captain John Dalziel capped a strong drive by his pack with the late try. This completed a double over the league leaders, the third brace of the season for Gala. |
| 17th |
Kirkcaldy |
H Won 46 - 8 |
| |
A six to one try scoreline emphasises the Gala superiority in the return game at Netherdale, where we wiped out memories of the disappointing match in Kirkcaldy. All round sharpness and a commitment to the game meant that we were superior in all phases. Try scorers were David Gray with two, Tom Weir, Jamie Henderson, Andy Mclean and replacement Gordon Waddell. Andy Mclean kicked five conversions and two penalties. |
| 24th |
Jed-Forest |
A Won 41 - 15 |
| |
Gala’s biggest ever score at Riverside Park saw the side hold on to pole position in the league. Six tries were again scored, with Gavin Dalgleish (two), Iain Berthinussen, Tim Stuck, Andy McLean and Paul MacDonald all involved. Andy’s kicking was again secure and netted him four conversions and a penalty goal. The pack had another good day and the backs found the conditions very much to their liking. |
| 31st |
Stewart's Melville FP |
A Lost 5 - 8 |
| |
In dreadful conditions of driving wind and rain we surrendered a 5-3 lead with the end of the game looming. Loss of an early penalty was countered by a good try from Iain Berthinussen, following some creative work by the back row and a quickly released ball. But the home left winger got his foot to a loose ball, leading to a late try far out on the left. Weather conditions ruined what could have been a colourful game. |

| February 04 |
| 7th |
West of Scotland |
H Won 44 - 5 |
| |
Another heavy winter day but the team overcame snow blizzard conditions in style, running in eight tries and adding two conversions from Andy McLean. Tom Weir led the scoring with three tries, scrum half Tim Stuck had a couple, and the other tries came from Euan Johnstone, Gavin Dalgleish and Gordon Waddell. Gala were in the lead in three minutes and never hesitated while producing their third highest ever score against the West. |
| 22nd |
Haddington BT Cup (3pm) |
H Won 30 - 18 |
| |
It took a big effort to subdue a spirited opposition which was leading at half time in this fifth round Cup game. The Maroons picked up five tries through Jamie Henderson, Iain Berthinussen, Tim Stuck, Gavin Dalgleish and David Gray, with Andy McLean converting one and kicking a penalty. The game was an intense affair in which we had to grind out the win that kept the season’s unbeaten home record intact.

| March 04 |
| 5th |
Peebles (BL) |
A Lost 23 - 14 |
| |
With players away on international duty and others being brought in for much needed match exposure the selection for this Southern Reporter Border League game was unfamiliar. A lack of domination in the forward struggle, and the absence of much in the way of penetration behind the scrum meant that Gala were on the back foot for a lot of the game. Tom Weir picked up a late try and Jackson Berry kicked three first half penalties. |
| 13th |
Melrose BT Cup (3pm) |
H Lost 6 - 28 |
| |
After a bright start and an early lead the team went badly off the boil and ended well beaten in most departments of the game. Three tries were conceded, and Andy McLean’s two penalty goals in the first quarter were all we could salvage from this quarter final tie. |
| 20th |
Murrayfield Wanderers |
A Won 39 - 19 |
| |
The wind did its best to upset things, but we still managed seven tries to get the lift that took us to the Division 2 championship. A largely reserve threequarter line did well, and the forwards, despite injuries, coped well with a hard working home side. The tries came from Jamie Henderson, Malcolm Horsburgh, Chris Dalgleish, Gavin Dalgleish, Craig Hamilton, Tim Stuck, and Graeme Bryce. Andy McLean kicked two conversions in difficult conditions. |

Biggar |
A Lost 0- 31 |
| |
The last league match of the season ended on a wind and rain swept pitch where the home side were fired up for their bid to reach Division 1 for the first time. A shorthanded Gala side was never in the contest and were nineteen points adrift by halftime. Biggar fully deserved their win in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. |

Gala Sevens |
|
| |
Sponsored by The Allied Irish Bank (U.K.)
The opening tournament of the spring series saw the Royal Scots regain the Gala Cup with a display of powerful running and tackling. They beat Heriot’s in the final by 43 -5 after putting Gala out by 22-5 in the semi final. The day was a great success for the club with a good crowd, mixed weather, and several very exciting ties. |
| 10th |
Melrose Sevens |
|
| |
Gala opened strongly in their first tie and took what looked like a useful lead. But Peebles came back to win 21-14 with some late scores. Stellenbosch University beat Ponsonby in an exciting final tie. |
| 17th |
Hawick Sevens |
|
| |
After a convincing win by 28 - 14 in the first round over Haddington, Gala went out in their next tie, losing 14 - 29 to the Royal Scots with an unconvincing performance. The sports were won by Watsonians who beat Jed-forest in the final. |

Gala opened the Milntown tournament with a runaway win over late replacements Annan by 40 - 0, but came unstuck against Watsonians in the next tie, going out by 17 - 38. Hawick were the eventual winners. |

Earlston Sevens |
|
| |
All came well the next day at The Haugh, where a win over Duns by 45 - 7 set up a cracker of a tie against the Royal Scots. The Maroons were 19-0 down at the interval against the favoured Fijians, but produced some sensational rugby to win by 21-19, one of the great come backs of the season. The semifinal tie went our way by 26-7 over Selkirk, and the final was another easy win over Kelso, this time by 29 -12 |
| 8th |
Jed-forest Sevens |
|
| |
With the Kings of the Sevens title in the bag the Maroons side at Riverside Park eased off their game and crashed out in the first round to little fancied Grangemouth, despite twice being in front. The tournament was won by Watsonians who beat Jed-forest in the final. |

| CANADIAN TOUR |
| Brit Lions - Brockton Oval, Vancouver |
32 - 31 |
| A hard and physical game saw the tourists victorious even when facing an ever changing opposition side which featured no fewer than 29 players during the match. | Cowichans - Duncan |
39 - 28 |

It was the final games of their careers for Gary Isaac, Mark Ballantyne, and Moubray Tod. Gala's top scorer was Gavin Dalgleish with five penalties and two conversions, and there were also tries from Bruce Chalmers, Mark Ballantyne, and Gary Isaac, the last named scoring a couple at the end of his long career. |
