Towards the end of 2004 discussion took place between all Clubs in Gala regarding the way forward to ensure the best possible future for rugby in the town.
After allowing all Clubs the chance to discuss it at committee level the Gala Rugby Forum was formally put in place in January 2005 consisting of representatives from all Clubs (Academy reps to be invited), with the following key action points:
-
Encourage and develop the game of rugby football in the Galashiels community.
To consider a system for the development of rugby players in all Gala Clubs, and at all age groups. This process to consider the appointment of a Gala Development Officer, particularly in light of the SRU Genesis Report comments on this matter.
-
To monitor all players and develop their future through the Gala system.
This includes maintaining contact with any players leaving the Gala area with a view to encouraging them to continue playing for the Clubs or at least their return in the future should the possibility arise.
-
Develop the playing structure in Gala.
To monitor and improve the interaction between ALL Gala Clubs and schools to try and reduce the drop-off rate at age group transfer points and ensure that the relationship between senior Gala Clubs encourages players to develop their skills and strive to play 1st XV rugby at the highest level.
-
Develop policies and procedures required to encourage the above.
To consider and implement the policies and procedures necessary to ensure that all aspects of the game are maintained to a standard to not only retain players from Gala but to encourage others to want to play here.
It should be stressed that this group is NOT to be seen as the answer to everything and should be recognised as an advisory/co-ordinating group to facilitate the implementation of preferred systems and inter-Club relationships.

January 2005 Update
With the various Clubs having their January committee meetings throughout the month there was only time for one meeting in January.
The Chairperson for the group was duly appointed with John Gray taking the hot seat. It was agreed that an overall WE attitude will be required if Gala rugby is to flourish again and each Club should consider all players on loan as they progress through the system.
An initial discussion was held primarily regarding the interaction of GRFC and GYMRFC with an agreement to speak to the respective coaches of these Clubs.

February 2005 Update
February saw the real work begin on various fronts with John Gray meeting with the coaches of GRFC & GYMRFC, followed by a meeting with GYMRFC coaches and selectors, then a meeting with the Juniors & YM players.
A common theme in all discussions has been the coaching/selection structure. As a result the establishment of a suitable structure with the right people in the right posts is critical to Gala rugby moving forward successfully. To this end a list of people has been drawn up for contacting in connection with the various posts and this work continues into March.
At the same time discussions have started with existing players at all levels regarding their intentions for next season. Where University courses etc. are a factor work has started in establishing a suitable method of retaining those players within the Gala setup.
In addition initial discussions have been held in connection with a Youth Development Officer and at the end of this month are awaiting details of possible funding options from SBC and the SRU to allow further thought to be given to this.
