26th January 2008 - Gala Star Vest Charity Lunch - details to follow.

The Gala Star Annual Charity Lunch, Saturday 27th January 2007

The Gala Star held their annual charity lunch on Saturday 27th January 2007 and again it was a huge success raising over £2,400. Over one hundred ex Star members and guests attended the lunch and they were suitably entertained by two top class spaekers in ex Gala and Scotland captain P.C. Brown and ex international referee Bob Burrell. Both fantastic ambassadors for the game of rugby football.

For the first time the Star invited guests and they included the presidents from the Gala Y.M, Wanderers Triangle, mini maroons and John Thorburn from the Border Reivers. Also invited were Gregor Townsend, Andy Miller Opeta Palepoi and Roddy Grant all members of the Reivers team and Roddy must have been very proud by the performance of his grandfather Bob Burrell when he entertained the company.

Monies raised this year have gone to the following:-

£700 Sick kids in Edinburgh (Leukaemia)
£700 Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue team
£700 The Larche and Snap in Inverness (Autistic Kids)
£100 David Loughton Tournament £100 Portable P.A system for the Gala Club
£100 Gala Star vets

Special mention must be made to both Gregor Townsend and Opeta Palepoi for kindly donating jerseys for our auction and their help on the day. Also many thanks to all our sponsors who without their help the lunch would not be the success it is and to the Gala club who allow us the use of the facilities and for their support and lastly to Marcus Barnot and his staff who served up an excellent meal once again.

On Saturday 5th May the Star vets had their first game of the season and it ended in a win over Portobello 24 - 22 and an excellent match it was albeit it was played in slow motion!! A good turn out of 30 fittish guys enjoyed a game played in glorious sunshine with a very firm pitch which aided their top of the ground type of game!!

Several beers were taken at Porty before heading down the road and much singing was carried out in between the frequent watering holes. A great day out was had by all and we look forward to many more next season.

Any gala player looking for vets rugby should contact Ian Easson at ianeasson@tiscali.co.uk

Plans to hold a game of touch rugby one night a week throughout the winter are well underway and any ex player looking to keep trim is very welcome.  Further details will be announced shortly.
