ARTHUR DORWARD

The club learned with regret last week of the death of one of our most celebrated players. Arthur Dorward was the first Gala man to captain his country and he will long be remembered as one of our many outstanding scrumhalves.
A member of a well known and respected Gala family, he followed his brother Tommy into the national side and went on to play 15 times for Scotland.
He was captain on three occasions and also played for the Barbarians.
For Gala he had three successful years as captain, playing 135 games, and scoring 38 tries as well as four drop goals,
His first game was against Jed-forest in 1945-6 and his last against Melrose in 1960-1.
He played with a lot of style in the Gala seven for several seasons, winning several medals.
A regular attender at Netherdale and the Friday lunch club, he will be missed by his many friends in rugby and the business world.
