Laing Speirs: 1933-2024

It is with deep sadness that Gala Rugby learns of the passing of Laing Speirs.

Laing was a highly respected journalist and author, whose contributions to Gala and the rest of Borders Rugby, particularly through his regular writings for the Border Telegraph and other publications, left an indelible mark. His lifelong passion for rugby was evident in every aspect of his work, and his dedication to the sport was recognised by his appointment as a life member of Gala Rugby.

A tireless researcher and chronicler of the club's history, Laing meticulously gathered and preserved the statistics of the Gala RFC 1st XV from the club's founding in 1875. His work formed the foundations of what is now the club's comprehensive database. Laing’s records, which document every match and scorer from 1875 to 1939, and from 1945 onwards, include detailed match reports, team listings, and season scoring analyses. These invaluable records are now held by the Old Gala Club, a lasting tribute to Laing’s exceptional dedication and passion for the club’s history.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. His work will continue to inspire and guide the Gala Rugby community for years to come.
