MAROON’D@GALA IS MOVING
The next edition of the Maroon’d@Gala Sevens Festival will take place on 11 April 2026.
Due to circumstances outside of the club’s control - most notably extended school holidays (with pupils not returning until Wednesday 20 August 2025) and the proposal to bring forward National League fixtures by one week (to 23 August 2025) - the event, which has taken place annually in August since its launch in 2021, cannot be delivered successfully on its original date.
“The Maroon’d@Gala concept has been very well received, but we have to be realistic and we just can’t deliver a successful event in August when we’re facing these challenges,” said Sinclair Paterson, Gala RFC President.
“The longer school holidays impact the younger age groups due to difficulties coordinating teams right at the start of the new school year, while an earlier start to the National League will impact clubs’ ability to send competitive senior sevens teams to Maroon’d. These age groups might be at opposite ends of the spectrum, but their inclusion is fundamental to our success.
“That all said, we’re confident we can make the April date work. Together, we’re committed to creating an inclusive community event that local people want to be part of, and in our 150th anniversary year, we also want to celebrate the proud sporting history of Gala Rugby and inspire our future stars.”
Since its inception, Maroon’d@Gala organisers have committed to delivering an innovative community event, attracting new audiences and increasing spectator numbers, while also extending participation numbers with a focus on engaging under-represented groups including children and young people, girls and women, and players with a disability.
The original intended date for Maroon'd@Gala on 16 August 2025 will now host an inaugural event to kick off Gala Rugby's 150th ‘Anniversary Season’ celebrations (1875-2025/26).
